How do you measure a U-bolt so the replacement actually fits?
U-bolts come in roughly nine hundred sizes and the one you need is never the one at the store. Getting the right one is three measurements, not a guess.

Why it matters
Two of the three dimensions matching is the classic failure. The rod diameter is right, the width is right, and the legs are 20 mm short of the plate.
A near-fit is genuinely rescuable. A few gentle taps will pull the legs in or spread them out enough to drop through the holes.
What good looks like
- Both legs drop through the mounting plate without being forced
- Enough thread past the plate for the nuts plus a couple of turns
- The bend seats fully around the pipe or axle
How to apply it
- Caliper the rod diameter on a clean section.
- Measure the inside width between the inner faces of the legs.
- Measure leg length from the inside of the bend to the end of the thread.
- Match a replacement on all three, then tap the legs gently to fine-tune the width so it seats.
Exceptions & tradeoffs
Suspension U-bolts are a torqued safety item. Replace them with the correct rated part and torque to spec — don't reuse them, and don't reshape them more than a touch.
Hammering hardened or plated bolts can crack the plating and start corrosion under it. Gentle taps only.
