How do you break loose a stuck or rounded lug nut?
Twelve-point sockets exist because they're easier to get onto a fastener in a tight spot. On a seized lug nut, that convenience costs you the corners.

Why it matters
A 12-point socket contacts the corners of a hex. A 6-point contacts the flats. On a nut that's fighting you, the corners are the first thing to give, and once they're gone the socket just spins.
A hammered-on undersized socket cuts its own bite into what's left of the hex. It's a one-way trip for the nut, but the nut was already finished.
What good looks like
- Socket fully seated against the wheel face before any torque
- The nut cracks loose before the socket starts to slip
- The rounded one comes off still stuck inside the hammered socket
How to apply it
- Try a 6-point impact socket first, fully seated, straight on.
- If the nut is rounded, pick the 6-point socket one size down (metric on an imperial nut, or vice versa, often lands right).
- Hammer it squarely onto the nut until it's properly bitten on.
- Drive it off with the impact, then knock the nut out of the socket.
Exceptions & tradeoffs
Impact sockets only. A chrome hand socket on an impact wrench can shatter, and the pieces go somewhere.
Heat and penetrant help on a corroded stud — but be careful what you're heating near, and never heat a nut you're planning to reuse.
