How do you run a thread tap without a tap wrench?
Look at the top of a hand tap. That's a square drive. You own eleven things that turn a square drive.

Why it matters
A tap wrench does two jobs: it holds the tap square to the hole and it gives you even leverage on both sides. A socket does the first one well and the second one well enough.
Taps snap when they go in crooked or when you keep turning through a chip jam. The socket helps with crooked. Nothing helps with the chips except backing off.
What good looks like
- The tap starts square and stays square — sight it from two directions
- A quarter to half turn back for every turn forward, clearing chips
- Oil on the flutes the whole way
How to apply it
- Fit the tap's square shank into a socket that takes it with no slop.
- Start the tap by hand and check it's square from two directions before you put a ratchet on it.
- Turn with the ratchet, backing off often to break and clear chips.
- Keep cutting oil on it, and finish by hand if you're near the bottom of a blind hole.
Exceptions & tradeoffs
A ratchet gives you far less feel than a tap wrench, and feel is how you know a tap is about to break. Go gently on anything under M5 — or don't do this at all on small taps.
A breaker bar on one side pushes the tap off square. A T-handle or two-hand grip is better whenever you can manage it.
