How do you pour washer fluid in without wearing half of it?

The washer reservoir neck is behind the headlight, angled away from you, and about the size of a 50c piece. Whoever packaged that car was not thinking about you.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Save the flexible accordion spout from a DEF jug — it threads onto a washer-fluid jug and lets you aim a clean stream into a reservoir you can't reach.

Applies to

Process
Under-hood fluid top-ups
Materials
Washer fluid and similar non-critical fluids
Setup
The flip-out spout saved off a used DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) jug
Not for
Oil, brake fluid, or anything where cross-contamination matters

Why it matters

Buried reservoir necks are why half a jug ends up down the fender and on the driveway. A long flexible spout gets past the obstacle and puts the fluid where it's going.

The spout is designed to be thrown away. It's better than most funnels you'd buy.

What good looks like

  • The spout threads on snug with no drip at the neck
  • You can see the stream going into the reservoir
  • Nothing on the paint

How to apply it

  1. Save the flip-out spout off a used DEF jug and rinse it thoroughly.
  2. Screw it onto your washer-fluid jug.
  3. Extend and aim it into the reservoir neck.
  4. Pour steadily and watch the level — the spout hides the reservoir opening once it's in.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

Rinse it properly, and keep it for washer fluid only. DEF residue anywhere it doesn't belong is its own problem — never near a fuel filler.

It won't fit every jug. Thread sizes vary, so check before you bin the original cap.

Common mistakes

  • Using the same spout for multiple fluidsLabel it and keep it to one job
  • Filling past the max line because you can't see itCheck the level before and during — washer fluid expands when it freezes
