Why it matters
Reading a tape twenty times introduces twenty chances to misread it. A physical spacer removes the reading step entirely.
It doesn't remove accumulation though — a spacer that's 0.5 mm out is 10 mm out by the twentieth mark. Which is why you check the total at the end.
