How do you stop a drill bit at the right depth without a stop collar?
Tape works right up until the moment it doesn't, because you can't tell tape-at-depth from tape-just-past-depth when there's a pile of chips on it.

Why it matters
The tie sticks out past the bit, so it sweeps chips off the surface as it arrives and gives you a clear, obvious contact — visible and audible in a way tape isn't.
Blowing through the back of a panel, or bottoming a screw hole into something behind it, is the kind of mistake that's entirely preventable for the cost of one tie.
What good looks like
- Depth measured from the tip, with the flute length checked before you start
- The tie tight enough not to creep up the bit as you drill
- It brushes the surface right as you hit depth
How to apply it
- Hold the fastener or a ruler against the bit and mark the target depth from the tip.
- Cinch a zip tie at that point, tight enough not to move.
- Drill until the tie touches the surface, then stop.
- Check the tie hasn't crept after the first couple of holes.
Exceptions & tradeoffs
Fast drilling in metal gets the bit hot enough to soften nylon. Use a proper stop collar for metalwork, or check the tie between holes.
The tie spins with the bit. Keep it clear of anything it can catch, and don't use this on a lathe or a mag drill.
