Get The Fuck OutZip Tie TricksHang containers under a shelf

How do you use the dead space under a shelf?

The gap between the bottom of a shelf and the top of whatever's on the shelf below is storage nobody uses.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Zip-tie jars or containers beneath a shelf so small parts hang in the dead space instead of taking up shelf area.
Starting point
Two ties per container, spaced so it can't swing
Measured
Clearance under the container vs whatever sits on the shelf below

Why it matters

It's storage that costs no floor and no shelf. On a wall of shelving that adds up to a surprising amount.

Hanging containers are also visible from underneath, which is how you actually find things.

What good looks like

  • Two ties per container, so it can't swing or rotate
  • Enough clearance that you don't head-butt it reaching for the shelf below
  • Contents light — this is small parts, not paint tins

How to apply it

  1. Pick containers light enough to hang and pick where they'll go.
  2. Fix two ties per container through the shelf or around a rail.
  3. Check the clearance to whatever sits below before you commit.
  4. Load them and check nothing swings when you take a container down.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

Nylon creeps under sustained load, especially in a hot garage. Keep the loads light and check the ties every so often.

The classic version of this is a lid screwed to the shelf underside and the jar screwed into it. More work, holds more, doesn't creep.

Common mistakes

  • One tie per containerTwo, spaced — one lets it swing and spill
  • Hanging anything heavySmall parts only. Nylon in a warm garage stretches
