How do you stop small things tipping through wire shelving?

Wire shelving is cheap, strong, and completely hopeless at holding anything with a small footprint. Every bottle wants to lean into a gap.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Cut plastic or coroplast sheet to lay over wire shelving so bottles and small parts sit flat instead of tipping through the grid.
Starting point
Sheet cut to the shelf outline, notched around the uprights
Measured
Cut to sit inside the shelf lip so it can't slide off

Best for
Bottles, cans, small parts bins, anything narrow-based

Why it matters

A wire grid supports things by their edges. Anything with a small base bridges two wires and then tips off one of them.

It also stops the drips. Something that leaks on a wire shelf leaks on everything below it, all the way down.

What good looks like

  • Sheet sits flat with no rock, notched neatly around the uprights
  • It stays inside the shelf lip and can't slide off
  • Bottles stand square without leaning

How to apply it

  1. Measure the shelf and cut sheet to the outline.
  2. Notch the corners around the uprights so it drops in flat.
  3. Keep it inside the shelf lip so it can't slide.
  4. Wipe it down or swap it out when it gets grimy — that's the point of a liner.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

A liner blocks airflow, which matters if the shelving is in a damp garage or holding anything that wants to dry.

It doesn't add load capacity. The wire is still doing all the work.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting it oversized so it overhangs the lipInside the lip — an overhanging liner slides off with everything on it
  • Using cardboardIt wicks every spill and collapses. Plastic sheet or hardboard
