How do you stop losing the cap off a bottle?

Thread lock, spray adhesive, that one bottle of expensive cutting fluid. All missing exactly one cap.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Leash the cap to its bottle with a zip tie so it can't get put down somewhere and lost.
Starting point
One tie through a hole in the cap, looped around the neck
Measured

Setup

Best for
Solvents, glues, oils — the stuff that goes off when it's left open

Why it matters

A cap is only lost for a few minutes, but that's enough for the contents to skin, evaporate, or take a dose of dust.

Some products cost more than the tool you're using them on. Losing the cap on those is a real cost, not an inconvenience.

What good looks like

  • The cap can be fully removed and set down beside the bottle without tension
  • The leash doesn't tangle in the pour path
  • The tie around the neck can't ride up over the shoulder

How to apply it

  1. Drill a small hole in the cap skirt if there isn't one.
  2. Run a tie through it and loop it loosely around the bottle neck.
  3. Leave enough length to open the cap fully and set it aside.
  4. Trim the tails flush.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

Don't do this on a cap that's part of a seal, a child-resistant closure, or a pressure container. Drilling a cap can compromise the seal.

On a solvent bottle, make sure the leash can't sit in the pour path and wick product down the side.

Common mistakes

  • Leash so short you can't get the cap out of the wayLong enough to fully open and set down
  • Drilling through a sealing cap faceThrough the skirt only, never the sealing surface
