Can you make a bracelet out of a zip tie?

Not every rule in this library is about not dying near a grinder. Some of them are just a thing you can do on a Sunday with a kid.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Thread beads onto a zip tie and close it into a loop for a quick bracelet — the ratchet head sizes it and holds it.

Why it matters

The zip tie head does the sizing and the fastening in one, which is the fiddly part of every bead bracelet.

It's a five-minute make with materials already in the drawer.

What good looks like

  • Beads slide on without forcing
  • Sized with a bit of slack, since it doesn't loosen afterwards
  • Tail trimmed flush and the head rotated somewhere comfortable

How to apply it

  1. Pick beads whose holes clear the strap width.
  2. Thread them on, leaving room for the head.
  3. Close the tie to size — leave slack, because it only goes one way.
  4. Trim the tail flush and turn the head so it doesn't dig in.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

A zip tie can't be loosened. Don't put one on a small child's wrist, and never on an ankle or a neck.

Cut ends are sharp. Trim flush and check by feel before it goes on anyone.

Common mistakes

  • Cinching it to a snug fitLeave slack. It doesn't come back
  • Leaving a sharp tailFlush cut, then run a finger over it before it goes on a wrist
