Get The Fuck OutZip Tie TricksEmergency belt

Can you make a belt out of zip ties?

Yes. It looks exactly as ridiculous as you'd expect, and it holds your trousers up, which is the entire specification.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Link zip ties head to tail into a chain long enough to go around your waist, and cinch the last one to close it.
Starting point
Enough ties chained to reach your waist, plus a bit
Measured
Combined strap length minus the heads

Why it matters

It's a chain-of-ties in a costume, and the useful lesson is the chaining, not the belt. Once you know ties link head to tail, a lot of length problems stop being problems.

Genuinely handy if a belt breaks on site and the alternative is holding your trousers up all afternoon.

What good looks like

  • Same-width ties all the way round
  • The closing head sits somewhere you can reach it
  • Every tail trimmed flush

How to apply it

  1. Chain ties head to tail until the length goes around your waist.
  2. Thread it through the belt loops.
  3. Cinch the final head to close it, snug not tight.
  4. Trim the tails flush.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

You can't loosen a zip tie once it's cinched. Don't do this so tight you need cutters to breathe — leave slack, and keep the cutters on you.

Nylon edges cut skin under load. Not against bare skin, and not for anything that has to hold real weight.

Common mistakes

  • Cinching the closing tie all the way tightSnug. It doesn't come back the other way
  • Not keeping cutters to handYou will need them. That's how zip ties work
