How do you join two boards at an odd angle without measuring it?
The angle is 37.4°. Or 37.6°. Your miter saw has a detent at 37.5° and your protractor reads to the nearest degree on a good day. Stop measuring it.

Why it matters
Real angles in real buildings are almost never round numbers. Every step of measuring one — read it, transfer it, set the saw — adds its own small error, and they stack in the same direction more often than they cancel.
A scribed line has zero transfer error. You marked the wood against the wood.
What good looks like
- The joint closes tight with no shim and no fussing
- Marks on both faces so the cut stays square through the thickness
- One dry test-fit before anything is fastened
How to apply it
- Clamp or hold both members exactly where they'll live.
- Mark where one crosses the other — both faces, not just the one you can see.
- Cut to the line, leaving it if you want a tight fit you can pare back.
- Test-fit before fastening.
Exceptions & tradeoffs
Everything depends on the parts being held in true position while you mark. A member that sags 5 mm under its own weight gives you a joint that's perfect for a sagging member.
