How do you build or clad a curved staircase?

On a curved stair every single riser, tread and skirt piece is a slightly different shape. Not similar. Different. There is no cut list that saves you here.

Why it matters

A curve makes every piece unique, and standard stair jigs assume they aren't. Scribing off the actual structure is the only thing that gives tight joints all the way up.

Cladding a curve is a bending problem, not a cutting problem. Thin strips — kerfed or laminated — follow a radius that a single thick board will fight the whole way.

What good looks like

  • Every piece cut from its own template, labelled and in order
  • A skirt that follows the curve with no flat facets in it
  • Joints that close before any fastener goes in

How to apply it

  1. Make a template for each piece against the real opening — one at a time, in order.
  2. Transfer and cut, leaving the line where you want a tight scribe.
  3. Clad curved faces with thin strips, kerfed or laminated, so they take the radius without stress.
  4. Work piece by piece up the curve, checking the fit before you fasten.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

This is a multi-day build compressed into a clip, not a five-minute hack. Budget the time it deserves — the source video is literally titled "yes its a lot of time."

Very tight radii will exceed what a strip will take dry. Kerf the back, steam it, or laminate thinner plies.
