How do you open a stuck jar lid with a zip tie?

Hot water, rubber glove, tap the edge with a knife. Or: put a strap around it and use a lever, which is how every other stuck round thing gets opened.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Loop a zip tie around the lid, cinch it tight, and pull the tail as a lever — you get grip plus leverage instead of just squeezing harder.
Starting point
Tie cinched around the lid rim, tail left long as the handle
Measured
Tail long enough to give real leverage — don't trim it first

Why it matters

A stuck lid isn't a strength problem, it's a grip problem — your hand slips before the lid moves. The tie grips for you.

Then the tail gives you a lever arm, which multiplies whatever force you've got left after the grip stopped being the limit.

What good looks like

  • The tie sits on the knurled band of the lid, not slipping up over the top
  • The tail stays long enough to actually pull on
  • The lid turns before the tie slips

How to apply it

  1. Loop the tie around the lid rim and cinch it tight.
  2. Leave the tail long — that's your handle.
  3. Hold the jar and pull the tail in the loosening direction.
  4. Once it cracks, cut the tie off and open it normally.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

Pull too hard on a glass jar with a tight tie and you can crack the neck. If it isn't moving, warm the lid rather than adding force.

This is a one-use tie. Cut it off, don't try to slide it.

Common mistakes

  • Trimming the tail before you use itThe tail is the lever. Leave it
  • Putting the tie high on the lid where it can ride offDown on the knurled band where it has something to bite
