How do you keep split conduit from gaping open?

An open slit lets the wires work their way out under vibration, and then the loom is protecting a section of empty air while a wire chafes on a bracket.
Seating the tie in a corrugation valley is the detail — on a ridge it slides along the run and ends up doing nothing.

Exceptions & tradeoffs
In a hot engine bay, use heat- and UV-rated ties. Standard nylon goes brittle and lets go, usually in a place you can't see.
Loom is abrasion protection, not waterproofing. It'll happily hold water against a wire if it's routed to collect it.
