How do you stop pens and markers migrating off the bench?

There are four markers in this shop. There is one on the bench. This is a permanent state of affairs.

⚡ Rule of thumb
Build a small wood caddy with compartments to corral pens, markers and hand tools in one place on the bench.
Starting point
Compartments sized to the specific things that keep going missing
Measured
Sized off the actual items — a marker, a square, a knife

Why it matters

Small things go missing because they have nowhere to be. Give them a place and the failure mode changes from "where is it" to "put it back."

The bench also stays clearer, which matters more than it sounds when the bench is also your assembly surface.

What good looks like

  • Compartments sized so things drop in and lift out one-handed
  • It's heavy or wide enough not to tip when you grab from one side
  • It lives in one spot and stays there

How to apply it

  1. Write down the five things you actually reach for most. Build for those.
  2. Size compartments to each — a marker slot is not a square slot.
  3. Cut and assemble from scrap, keeping the base wide enough that it won't tip.
  4. Give it a home on the bench and put things back in it.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

Build it for what you use, not for what a photo of a nice shop has in it. A caddy full of compartments you don't use is just a wider bench.

Keep it small. A big caddy becomes another surface to pile things on.

Common mistakes

  • Making every compartment the same sizeSize each one to what goes in it
  • A tall narrow caddyWide base, or it tips the first time you grab a screwdriver from the edge
