How do you keep the loose tail of a ratchet strap from flapping?
You've got 1.5 m of spare webbing hanging off a strap that only needed 2 m. At 100 km/h that tail is a whip, and it's whipping your paint.

Why it matters
A flapping tail frays itself against the load and the vehicle, and a frayed strap is a strap with a reduced rating you can't see.
It's also loud, it marks paint, and if it wraps something — a wheel, an exhaust, another strap — it stops being an annoyance.
What good looks like
- No webbing left free to flap
- The knot or chain releases with a pull, not a fight
- The ratchet handle still latches closed
How to apply it
- Tension the strap fully first. Never tie the tail before it's at working tension.
- Gather the excess.
- Daisy-chain it back on itself, or tie a slip knot close to the ratchet.
- Snug it so it stays put but comes free with one pull.

Don't tie a knot in the loaded section of webbing. A knot cuts strap strength substantially — this is for the loose tail only, past the ratchet.
Some people wrap the tail around the taut strap instead. Fine, as long as it can't work loose over a long drive.
