How do you stop the seat-belt reminder chime on a Ford?

The passenger seat has a toolbox on it. The toolbox is not going to put its belt on. The car disagrees, loudly, for the next forty minutes.

This silences a safety reminder, and that reminder exists for a reason. Belt up every time you drive. Only use this where a belt genuinely isn't in play — cargo on a seat, a repeated false trigger — and leave the driver's reminder alone.
⚡ Rule of thumb
Many Fords let you disable the Belt-Minder chime with a buckle/unbuckle sequence performed with the ignition on — no dealer required. The exact count and timing vary by model and year.

Why it matters

A chime that fires on every trip for a reason you already know about stops being information. It becomes noise you tune out — including on the trip where it actually matters.

The procedure is built into the car by the manufacturer and it resets. It's a documented setting, not a hack of the wiring.

What good looks like

  • The warning lamp acknowledges the sequence as you go — that's your confirmation you're doing it right
  • The chime is off for the intended seat, on for the driver
  • You can reverse it with the same sequence

How to apply it

  1. Look up the exact sequence for your model and model year first. This is the step people skip and then wonder why it didn't work.
  2. Turn the key on, engine off.
  3. Buckle and unbuckle the belt in the specified sequence, inside the specified time window.
  4. Confirm the chime is off, and confirm the driver's reminder still works.

Exceptions & tradeoffs

If the chime is firing on an empty seat with nothing on it, that's a fault — an occupancy sensor or a buckle switch. Don't silence a fault, fix it.

Some jurisdictions treat disabled seat-belt warnings as an inspection item. Worth knowing before you do it.

Common mistakes

  • Trying a sequence found for a different model yearLook up your exact year — the timing windows differ
  • Using it to permanently silence the driver's belt reminderDon't. Wear the belt
