How to make a finger joint box that fits
A finger joint box is the strongest easy box you can build. Here's how to make one two ways — and how to get the fit dead-on.

Interlocking teeth marching up a corner. That's a finger joint box, and it's the strongest box a beginner can build.
The reason is surface area. Every one of those little fingers is a gluing face, so a finger joint has many times the glue surface of a plain butt joint. It's why tool chests and utility boxes have used it for a century. And it's beginner-friendly because the joint jigs itself — the fingers only fit one way, so the corner lands square whether you meant it to or not.
You can make one two ways. Let's do both.
The two ways to cut it
On a table saw or router. The traditional route. You build (or buy) a box joint jig — a backer board with a pin that indexes each cut a fixed distance from the last. On a laser cutter. You skip the jig entirely. A box generator draws the fingers into a flat pattern, the laser cuts all four corners identically, and you assemble. Neither is "better." Thick hardwood on a table saw is a joy. A dozen small plywood boxes? Laser, every time.
The fit is all about one measurement
Here's the thing both methods share: a finger joint fits when the finger depth equals the material thickness, and the slot width equals the finger width. Miss either and you get fingers that stand proud or corners that gap.
On the saw, that's your blade width and jig pin. On the laser, it's the number you type for material thickness — so measure your actual sheet with calipers, not the label on it.
A tap-together fit beats a hammer-together fit. If you're reaching for a mallet, your joint is too tight — back off the thickness by a tenth of a millimetre and re-cut a test corner.
Assembly, glue, and clamping
Once the fingers fit:
- Dry-fit first. All four corners, no glue. Confirm the box pulls square and the fingers seat flush.
- Glue the faces, not the flats. Wood glue on the finger walls — a thin film, both sides. Too much and you'll fight squeeze-out.
- Clamp lightly. A well-cut finger joint barely needs pressure; it needs alignment. Band clamps or blue tape pulling the corners together is plenty.
- Flush-sand proud fingers. Cut them a hair long on purpose, then sand back to flush after the glue cures. Cleaner than trying to cut them dead-even.
