Orient the part to kill overhangs before you add support
The best support is no support. Before you generate a single support, ask how the part sits on the bed — a rotation and a chamfer often delete the overhang, the scar, and the print time all at once.

Why it matters
Orientation decides which faces are overhangs, how strong the part is along its layers, and which surfaces show tool marks. Change it first and a lot of ‘hard’ prints stop needing support at all.
Slant 3D’s example: a cube with a flat top and bottom that print differently, rotated up onto a chamfered corner at ~45°, now has good edges on every face, prints stronger, and needs no support anywhere. Reorienting is free and it’s the highest-leverage move you can make.
What good looks like
- The part is oriented so its overhangs fall within a printable angle
- Rotation + a small chamfer removes support instead of adding it
- The show surfaces and the load direction are considered in the orientation, not just ‘flat side down’
How to apply it
- Before generating support, try rotating the part (a ~45° tilt is a common win).
- Chamfer the leading/outer edge so the new bottom sits flat on the bed and the overhang self-supports.
- Check the layer direction runs with the load, and the best-looking faces end up where marks won’t show.
- Only add designed support for what still overhangs after reorienting.
Exceptions & tradeoffs
Some geometries (living hinges, tall thin parts) are constrained to one orientation — there, add a designed support fin rather than fighting the rotation.
