Wall thickness & extrusion widths

How thick should a 3D-printed wall be? Thin enough to save time, thick enough that it doesn’t snap — and it comes down to how many extrusion lines it’s made of.

Start FDM walls at 2–3 extrusion widths — with a 0.4 mm nozzle, that’s about 0.8–1.2 mm.

Why it matters

A single-line wall is one bead wide — brittle, prone to gaps, and it delaminates under load. Going to two or three lines gives the slicer overlapping beads that actually bond, so the wall carries force instead of splitting along a seam.

For strength, add walls before you add infill: perimeters sit on the load path, infill mostly braces them.

What good looks like

  • Wall thickness is a clean multiple of your line width
  • No thin single-bead sections the slicer has to fudge
  • Load-bearing walls get perimeters, not just more infill

How to apply it

  1. Set wall thickness to 2–3× your line width in the model or slicer.
  2. Confirm the slicer resolves solid perimeters — no gap-fill warnings.
  3. Print a test coupon and load it in the real direction before you commit.
