Design handles that need no support
A handle is just a hole in the side of a part — and it’s a masterclass in DFM. Reinforce the opening, chamfer the overhang, and often you can drop the through-hole entirely.

Why it matters
A bare hole in the side is a stress concentration — pull on it and the part splits along the layers. A small reinforcing rim (about a millimetre around the opening) spreads that load for almost no extra CAD.
The top of a side opening is an overhang. Chamfer it instead of letting the slicer support it: the material that would have been wasted support goes into the part, making it stronger and cleaner. And if fingers don’t actually need to pass through, an indented grip removes the overhang problem completely — a cavity 3D printing can make that moulding never could.
What good looks like
- The opening has a thickened rim so it doesn’t split under a pull
- The overhang is chamfered (or the grip is indented) so there’s no support to remove
- Where support truly is needed, it’s a modeled break-away block with a grab tab, not slicer support
How to apply it
- Add a ~1 mm reinforcing rim around the opening to kill the stress concentration.
- Chamfer the overhanging top edge so it self-supports and the material adds strength.
- Ask whether fingers must pass through — if not, switch to an indented grip and delete the overhang.
- If a large opening still needs support, model a break-away block (spaced ~0.2 mm) with a small grab tab for clean removal.
